The Company
Promoting the welfare of the horse since 1356

The Worshipful Company of Farriers, founded in 1356, as a medieval guild of Farriers dedicated to upholding the high standards of equine welfare within the City of London. Recognised by a Royal Charter granted by Charles II in 1674, the Company holds the esteemed 55th position in seniority among the City of London Livery Companies.
The Company plays a pivotal role in upholding professional standards under the Farriers Registration Act 1975. We work tirelessly to prevent cruelty to horses by promoting proper shoeing practices by skilled farriers. Through our globally recognised qualifications, the Associateship (AWCF) and Fellowship (FWCF), we support farriers worldwide, including practitioners in South Africa, Australia, Sweden, Finland, Italy, and the USA, ensuring continuous professional development and excellence in the craft.
Our commitment to excellence extends to competitive arenas. The Company actively supports shoeing competitions and awards prizes for exceptional work, including the prestigious ‘best shod’ awards at notable events such as County Shows, Horse Trials, the Grand National Meeting, and British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse.
The Worshipful Company of Farriers proudly combines its rich historical heritage with a forward-looking mission, bridging tradition and innovation to preserve its relevance in the modern era.
